About the Car

Morgan began its business in 1909 building 3 wheeled vehicles with 2 and 4 seats. By having three wheels, they were classed as cyclecars, which allowed them to avoid being taxed as automobiles. Some of the most successful early 3 wheelers were V-Twin, using either Matchless or J.A.P. engines, Though they also built a range utilizing Ford inline engines which continued until 1952, with the V-Twins being discontinued at the start of World War 2. The Modern Morgan 3 Wheeler was reintroduced by Morgan in 2012, though its initial design began outside the company with a 3 wheeled car built by Peter Larsen in Seattle, Washington, inspired by but not copied from the earlier Morgan. He called his vehicle the Liberty Ace and was producing them commercially under that name. Morgan’s entry into the story came after a London Times journalist published an article about the Liberty Ace and Morgan contacted Peter about the car, purchasing one from him. They later bought the rights to the design and with a few small changes, put it into production as the modern Morgan 3 Wheeler. Powered by an S&S V-Twin engine, coupled with a Mazda 5 speed gearbox and independent suspension all around it weighs in at approximately 1200 pounds. By being classified as a motorcycle for import into the United States, it isn’t required to have many of the safety features mandated for car production in the United States. As a result, the 3 wheeler was the only vehicle Morgan could sell in the US at the time. Production of the V-Twin Morgan Three Wheeler ceased in 2021 to be replaced by a new model utilizing an inline 3 cylinder engine. This Morgan 3 Wheeler was custom ordered new from the factory through Peter Larsen, whose vehicle inspired its production. The choice was made to emphasize the more vintage elements of the design as much as possible with the Brooklands-style wheel, full windscreen, chrome accents, and pinstriping. We picked the car up from Peter on its arrival and brought it back home. In driving, the car is a lot of fun, with good speed and acceleration from the large engine with an incredible exhaust sound. The drivetrain is loud, even without the added noise of the exhaust, especially the rear differential unit that runs the belt drive for the rear wheel. Handling is pretty good, though having three offset wheels makes it very difficult to avoid obstacles in the road like pot holes as one of the three wheels is almost certainly going to be inline with it. Although it is classed as a motorcycle, Oregon law created a cycle car designation that the three wheeler falls into, which allows one to drive it without a motorcycle endorsement and it is a very fun car to take out and run around on back roads in. Being a two cylinder motorcycle engine, the torque curve comes on a bit high in the RPM range so driving it, you have to be careful not to lug the engine but overall engine response is quite good.
