About the Car

Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan started building 3 wheelers in 1909, officially starting the Morgan Motor Company in 1910 and didn’t produce a 4 wheeled vehicle until 1935, the year this example was made. The justification behind the 3 wheeler as opposed to a 4 wheel car was that it was classified as a motorcycle and thus was exempt from the United Kingdom’s tax on automobiles and there were multiple other manufacturers building them at the time. Based in the hilly town of Malvern, HFS Morgan focused on a light weight high horsepower 3 wheeler to better suit the terrain and as a result they proved to be very capable high performance examples of the type. The Morgan 3 wheeler is not a very intuitive vehicle to drive, as it has a non-synchro reversed shift pattern 3 speed gearbox with the only pedals being a brake and a clutch. The throttle control, as well as the ignition advance and choke are on the steering wheel, making double clutching interesting, with bowden cables running to the appropriate parts of the engine, requiring that the steering wheel can’t turn more than 360 degrees, so the turning radius for as small a vehicle as this is is surprisingly bad. The cockpit seats two people, if they are both very friendly and small, and the ride is stiff but sporting, though it is almost impossible to dodge any potholes, as if you miss it with the front wheels you’re likely to hit it with the rear. This example has been in the United States for quite a few years, with a good ownership history of people who did a good job caring for their vehicles. The previous owner put a lot of work into sorting out issues with the driveline, some of which dated from when this Morgan was new, but at this point it runs and drives as it should. This example has been upgraded to hydraulic brakes operating on the front wheels and a 12 volt electrical system running off a chain driven alternator hidden behind the seat, so the battery charges as long as you are moving. Most Morgans of this era had air cooled engines, usually built by JAP or Matchless, but the top of the line models like this one were fitted with the higher output Matchless MX4 engine with water-cooled heads and a radiator mounted behind the engine.
