About the Car

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint was the continuation of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, but with a 1.6 liter engine replacing the 1.3 liter and fitted with a 5 speed gearbox. The original Giulietta Sprint was introduced in 1954 as Alfa Romeo’s first foray into the small displacement class of cars, and unusually predated all other variants including the 4 door Berlina by at least a year. Initially identified as the 750 series, following a redesign in 1959 making the car a bit longer and larger, the series was renamed 101. In 1963, Alfa Romeo stopped production of the Giulietta, and upgraded all the 101 series sports cars, including the Sprint with the 1.6 liter engine and produced them for another two years, selling them as a Giulia. Although the Giulia Sprint was fitted with drum brakes, the front drum brakes are finned, significantly wider than the majority of other cars and were fitted with triple leading shoes making them still incredibly effective in sporting use. The first time I attempted to buy our Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint, I ended up being outbid on the car in an online auction, so when it popped up for sale again two years later, I leapt on it and am incredibly happy that I did. This car is a very well sorted driver level car with a non-original but nicely done interior, a somewhat patinated exterior with an older repaint in dark blue and a very correct looking engine bay. The car is otherwise entirely stock with the original 1.6 liter engine with its single downdraft Solex carburettor, 5 speed transmission and drum brakes. As far as driving experience, the Giulia Sprint is one of the nicest classic cars I’ve driven, with very predictable handling, excellent performance and good comfort. I’ve driven this car on numerous long tours, as well as around town, on highways, and on back roads and it is truly at home wherever I take it. Although the design was getting dated by 1963, it has aged extremely well and now stands out as an iconic example of classic Italian design.
